Accidents & Illness of Children

• Please ensure that your home, work and mobile telephone numbers are kept up-to-date in the School Office in case of an emergency.
• All accidents, other than very minor ones, are recorded in the Health Office Daily Log.
• If an accident or illness is such that a visit to a hospital may be required, parents will be contacted as soon as possible. It is the parent’s responsibility to take their child to the hospital.
• If an accident or illness is of a very serious nature, an ambulance will be called immediately and the parents contacted as soon as possible. A member of staff will accompany the child in the ambulance if the parents are unable to get to school in time.
• If a child has received a significant bump on the head, either the parent will be contacted on the telephone or notification will be sent home with the child. If the head injury is anything that requires more attention, the parents will be contacted as soon as possible and advised to take their child to a hospital as a precaution.
• In all cases of accidents and illnesses, the child’s well-being is the primary concern. Hence, it is better to be overly cautious when making judgements and deciding on the appropriate action.

When a Student Becomes ill or Injured at School

• If a student becomes ill whilst at School, the parents or, if they are unable to be contacted, the emergency contact person, will be notified and required to pick-up the child promptly, and take them home. In the meantime, the student will be allowed to rest in the Health Office.
• The School staff can only provide limited medical attention such as an ice pack, Band-Aid, fever and pain-relieving medication, temperature readings, etc. 
• If a student should suddenly become extremely ill, or is seriously injured whilst at School, the parents or emergency contact person will be notified immediately and the student taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. 
• In circumstances where the parents or the emergency contact person cannot be reached, St. Michael’s International School will take the necessary and appropriate actions to ensure the safety and well-being of the student.
• Please ensure that your home, work and mobile telephone numbers, as well as those of your emergency contact person, are kept up-to-date in the Health Office, in case of an emergency.

Staying Healthy during COVID-19 

Movement of students around school will be supervised by an adult. Children will be encouraged to adhere to the 1m distance where possible. Stickers and posters, displayed in central locations, provide visual reminders of physical distancing and healthy behaviours.  A general healthy lifestyle such as having plenty of sleep, nutrition and exercise is highly encouraged to boost the immune system

We will continue to remind children of the following expectations:

• Wear a mask inside;  do not take it off, do not swap it with a friend
• Wash hands when you arrive at your classroom
• Sanitise hands before putting your belongings into your locker
• Wash hands when you leave the classroom
• Use the sink and bathrooms closest to your own classroom
• Wash hands after using the bathroom, then use hand sanitiser
• Wash hands and sanitise after sneezing, coughing, blowing nose
• Wash hands before & after lunch
• Wash hands and sanitise after touching common resources (such as playground & PE equipment)
• Keep hands and bodies to yourself
• Walk on the right hand side of corridors and staircases
• When going up or down stairs, keep at least three steps between you and the next person.

Health Office

The school Nurse monitors the health of students and faculty and maintains a key role in infection control, virus prevention and health advice. Parents concerned about their child’s health are asked to keep their child at home until you have spoked to the School Nurse for advice.  If a household member is unwell, we also ask you to keep your child at home until symptoms are clear.

Children exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms during the school day will be supervised in our temporary Emergency Room until a parent or designated adult can collect them.

Responding to confirmed cases of COVID-19

St. Michael’s International School will likely be notified of a positive COVID-19 test in one of two ways:

1. Local health officials
2. A faculty member or parent of a student* 

School is obliged to inform local health officials of any positive tests.

People who test positive for COVID-19 have a right to privacy.  At the same time however, St. Michael’s may be required to notify applicable governmental or public health officials as well as anyone who may be affected directly by the positive diagnosis.  In such circumstances we will seek consent from the family before sharing the relevant information. When a positive COVID-19 case occurs in a class at school the class parents will be informed by email but the name of the infected family will be withheld.
