Our two boys were at St Michael’s from nursery all the way through to graduating from year 6. We are a bicultural, bilingual British/Japanese family. The school is certainly warm and welcoming – parents as well as children made plenty of friends there! Being a small school helps to build relations between staff, children and their families, and this is something that we really appreciated.
My children made many good friendships and learned a lot from the people around them. The teachers endeavour to bring out the best in all students. The fact that my daughter wants to become a primary school teacher plainly tells you the excellence of this school.

St. Michael’s was a great choice for our family. Our older son started in Year 1, and our younger son started in the Nursery program, at age 3, and both boys continued on to graduate at the end of Year 6. At St. Michael’s they got a solid foundation that continues to support their learning today in junior high and high school. Both my son and daughter attended St. Michael’s between 2002 to 2018, so we have been with the school for a very long time! Both of them loved going to school everyday and loved the school. They were nurtured in becoming independent thinkers. As parents, we felt we were also part of a big family and learned a lot from being in contact with different cultures.
We consider St. Michael’s a great choice for our son who joined from Year One and continued on to graduate in Year Six. St. Michael’s warm, nurturing and stimulating environment created a positive impact on him from an early stage – he loved school and brought home happy stories of his learning journey. In addition, the school reinforced social and character development through various classroom activities – transforming students into caring, compassionate and well-rounded individuals.
We have been part of the St. Michael’s family for six years until my son graduated last year. Even now I remember very clearly the first day when my son and I went to St. Michael’s for the school tour. The first thing we saw was the very kind smile from the Admissions Officer Miss Kimura. She gave us a very warm tour around school and treated us like family. My son told me secretly that he would like to attend school at SMIS although he never said that after visiting other schools. My son was lucky to have some great and caring teachers who taught him well. My son formed firm friendships with many children and enjoyed going to school everyday. After all these years in SMIS, the office gave us lots of help too. So I want to say sometimes when you choose a school, the staff members all around the school play a big part.
St. Michael’s was the joint choice made by my kids themselves during their first visit. It was unanimous in our family and it is absolutely the best choice we could ever imagine for our experience of living in Kobe. SMIS made the transition for my kids to start a new school in a new country so easy, smooth, delightful and rewarding. At St.Michael’s, my child was cared for and inspired as if he were part of a big, loving, traditional family. We love this opportunity to share our thoughts about St. Michael International School (SMIS) with you. Our son attended the school from Reception to his graduation at the end of Year 6. Immediately after moving to Japan in 2014, he got admitted into the school. Everything was so new to him and as parents we were worried about this transition. However, the warm and loving environment of SMIS turned this transition phase into a comfortable and pleasant experience for all of us. We are fond of this small, still diverse, and lively school community that celebrates diversity. We appreciate the endeavor and kind support of the teachers and staff members shown to us all the way through our son’s schooling. For many years I’ve felt like a part of the St. Michael’s family, I felt very touched by the school.
